I would really appreciate a mode in which the Ribbon can be turned off or at least modifiable. I really liked how Office 03 worked in that it was modifiable. I would go for the ability for the user to edit and save a ribbon configuration. Then provide a selection feature for the user to select from one of the configurations. In some instances, I am simply trying to write document, in which case i want access to certain commands and functions. I other cases, I am reviewing/editing/redlining a document and want other features. In other cases, I am interfacing with multiple apps, liek Excel, PPT and Word and would want other commands and features t be present. So, my two biggest beefs with Office 03 are that 1. the ribbon takes too much space, is not configurable, so it does not provide me with what i really use, and 2. many of the dialog boxes and right-mouse type responses are slow. Word 07, Excel 07 are slow to respond. I’m on a dual core machine with XP Pro, so it is not my HW.

Just double click the ribbon tab you’re on and the ribbon will collapse up. It will still list the ribbon tabs, but the bulk of the ribbon will disappear…

Just customize the quick access toolbar with the shortcuts you want…
I also miss the customization from Office 2003. One little line all the way at the top of the screen doesn’t cut it.
The main change I saw at first with 2010 was the big circle button is now a more traditional “File” menu. But the file menu takes up the whole screen! It will completely obscure the view of the open document.
I’m looking for a way to get back to the menus and toolbars of Office 2003 that I grew to understand pretty well over a long time. Office 2007 is way frustrating, just trying to find simple commands – lots of wasted time searching. Does 2010 provide the customization capabilities for me to take a step back to 2003-type menus and toolbars?
